TEN things to do of-TEN
1. Stretch (Loosens up the bound up tissue on the body from overuse and/or injury (i.e. muscle spasms, scar tissue). The perfect time is right out of the shower in the morning and right before bed in the evening. If you need help with this, let Dr. Harrison know at your next visit for specific stretches for your situation.
2. Drink More Water (A high percentage (around 70%) of our body is made up of this essential liquid, stay hydrated). Take it easy with the soft drinks, alcohol, energy drinks, etc…
3. Exercise (This should be viewed like an essential ingredient, much like vitamins and minerals). For everyone this will be different; some walk, some run, some play golf or soccer while others may play pickleball. The ultimate goal is to do something that doesn’t have a high likelihood for injury and more importantly you have fun with it. Your overall condition going into the activity matters tremendously as well. Be smart about what your body is capable of. Someone 22 is probably going to be doing different activities and levels of the same activities than someone 62. This will make your mind and your body perform at higher levels. Most people share with me that they work out to limit cloudiness and stress build-up in their mind.
4. Eat a salad and more fruits and vegetables (most people have diets very deficient in these things). The beauty of salads is that you can add all kinds of healthy things into them to create a blended variety of tastes. Dark, green, leafy vegetables and healthy complex carbohydrates (whole grain foods and starchy vegetables), which last longer in your system than man-made simple carbohydrates (soda, candy, mainly-sugar based food items; check the ingredients!) will benefit you as well.
5. Sleep more. The less one sleeps, the greater the chance for diseases to take place and for the body to be run down. It’s hard to be your very best when you’re only getting 5-6 hours. The body runs its best off of 7-8 hours, 8 being the preferable amount. Always look at your body as a battery and it needs time to re-charge and rejuvenate itself. Running low on sleep is comparable to someone drinking and trying to be alert and make the best decisions. Poor decisions made at work and in your home from a lack of sleep affects everyone. They don’t go well together.
6. Downtime. It’s o.k. to not constantly be in “go-mode”, looking to be productive on a non-stop basis. Take time out of your day and weekend to rest and slow down. Most of our lives are too fast-paced. I love the phrase: “get busy living or get busy dying”, but we ALL have limits…know yours! As we age, we all are…some are speeding it up faster than others (with poor decisions)…recognize that your capabilities may be changing and you may need more “rest stops” along the way! 🙂
7. Get adjusted. It’s one of the few things that literally takes a few minutes to have a profound effect on your overall health. Reducing the stress buildup on your nervous system, which controls everything, can limit or eliminate: pain, stiffness, numbness/tingling, muscle weakness, etc…
8. Get a massage. Having extensive soft tissue work performed switches the body from a sympathetic state to a parasympathetic state (“an excited state to a more relaxed one”). Not only is this getting accomplished, but eliminating the underlying issue(s) through the use of superficial or deep tissue work allows for the muscles to relax, blood to flow better, and nerves to send more accurate signals. Getting adjusted afterwards makes it easier on the Chiropractor to move things back into position as well; they most definitely compliment each other.
9. Smile/Have an Upbeat Positive Attitude. Your outlook and what you focus on becomes your reality. After all, we ALL have a choice: each and every day; make sound, well-educated, informed decisions.
10. Love and allow yourself to be loved!
