Necessary “Steps” Advice To Prevent Falls
AVOIDING SLIPS, TRIPS, AND FALLS IN WINTER WEATHER
- Wear appropriate footwear — wear shoes or boots with rough (waffled, ridged or heavily textured) soles.
- Use handrails wherever they are provided.
- Concentrate on the path ahead — take your time and proceed slowly and do NOT use cell phone while walking.
- Where possible, avoid slippery surfaces — take a route around obvious slippery hazards.
- Anticipate ice. Be wary of thin sheets of ice that may appear as wet pavement (black ice). Often ice will appear in the morning, in shady spots or where the sun shines during the day and melted snow refreezes at night.
- Be careful when you shift your weight. When stepping off a curb or getting into a car, be careful since shifting your weight may cause an imbalance and result in a fall.
- Wear gloves in cold weather rather than putting hands in your pockets to keep them warm. In the event of a slip or fall, you may be better suited to regain your balance or catch yourself if your hands are free.
- Always maintain three points of contact (two hands and one foot or one hand and two feet) when getting out of vehicle to allow maximum stability and support especially on snow and ice.
